Tonsils are a pair of prominent masses of lymphoid tissue that lie on each side of the throat between two folds of soft tissue that bound the fauces. They are a part of the body's immune system. Because of their location in the throat, they are able to stop infective agents from entering the body through the mouth or nose.

There are different types of tonsils

  • Palatine tonsils
  • Pharyngeal tonsils or Adenoids
  • Lingual tonsils

All these together are called Waldeyer's ring as they form a ring around the opening to the throat and help to prevent the entry of bacteria or viruses from entering the body. A tonsillitis is an inflammation of the two tiny, oval-shaped masses of tissue that are found at the back of the throat. The tonsils are a component of the immune system and aid in preventing infection.

There are two primary forms of tonsillitis

1. Acute Tonsillitis

Acute tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils that is usually caused by an infection. It primarily affects school-aged children but can occur in individuals of any age. Symptoms lasts for mostly 3-4 days or up to 2 weeks

  • Fever
  • Having trouble swallowing

  • Sore throat or tonsillitis at least 5-7 times in 1 year
  • Occurrences at least 5 times in each of the previous 2 years
  • Occurrences at least 3 times in each of the previous 3 years

3. Chronic Tonsillitis

Long standing tonsillitis with sore throat, bad breath and tender lymph nodes in neck.Causes: Children are more prone to develop tonsillitis than adults. Children between the ages of 5 and 15 years are more likely to develop tonsillitis from bacterial infection. Children younger than 5 years of age have viral infection as the most common aetiology. Exposure to bacteria or viruses can occur very easily among children or from children to adults. Streptococcus is the commonest causative organism followed by adenoviruses, influenza virus, Epstein-Barr virus, parainfluenza virus, enteroviruses and Herpes simplex virus.

Tonsillitis risk factors include

  • Young Age: Children are most frequently affected by tonsillitis, and kids between the ages of five and fifteen are most frequently affected by bacterial tonsillitis.
  • Frequent contact with pathogens: Children in school are regularly exposed to viruses or bacteria that might cause tonsillitis due to close interaction with their friends.
  • Genetics: Genetics is also known to play a vital role in causing tonsillitis.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Red, swollen tonsils
  • Sore throats
  • White or yellow coating or patches on the tonsils

Action of Ingredients

  • Mercurius iodatus ruber (Merc. bin iodatus): Mercurius iodatus ruber is a homeopathic remedy that is derived from mercuric iodide. Mercurius iodatus ruber is effective in managing glandular affections thereby regulating proper functioning of the glands involved in the immune response.
  • Kali muriaticum: It is indicated when the tonsils are inflammed and enlarged to such an extent that there is difficulty in breathing. There are greyish-white deposits/spots on the tonsils. Spasmodic cough with thick and white sputum.
  • Belladonna: Belladonna, also known as Atropa belladonna or deadly nightshade. The active component alkaloids aid in treating various throat-related issues. Baryta carbonica is beneficial for cases of swollen tonsils (chronic tonsil hypertrophy) caused by recurrent cold and cough symptoms.
